Ille-et-Vilaine's wide open spaces
50 sites in Ille-et-Vilaine
The 50th ?natural area? has recently been inaugurated in the Canut
Valley south of Rennes. Like the 49 other sites, the Canut Valley
guarantees an unspoilt environment open to all and respectful of the
rules of the countryside.
Ille-et-Vilaine boasts a wide variety of high-quality environmental
sites. There are wetlands, peat bogs, woods and forests, valleys,
cliffs and sand dunes, all of them worth visiting for the scenery as
well as the flora and fauna.
The 50 ?natural areas? in Ille-et-Vilaine cover a total of 2,500 hectares.
Because of their major ecological interest and their usefulness in maintaining quality of life, these particularly sensitive areas of natural beauty must be enhanced and preserved.

These areas include the sand dunes in Roz-Ven in Saint-Coulomb, La Chambre au Loup Valley in Iffendic, La Forge lake in Martigné-Ferchaud, the Landemarais peat bogs in Parigné, gravel pits, rocky headlands, moors etc. In fact, from year to year Ille-et-Vilaine Conseil général is improving public access to these 50 areas of outstanding natural beauty.New! Interpretive trails await those wishing to know more about the natural environment and local heritage.At the Cojoux Moors in Saint-Just, the Jaunouse wetlands in Billé, the arboretum in the Tour Du Guesclin park in Le Grand-Fougeray, the Landemarais peat bog in Parigné and the wooded Corbinières Valley, there are five interpretative trails providing information about the natural environments.
Reconciling the management of ?natural areas? with social insertion
As part of the management of these ?natural areas?, a system has been set up to recruit people on an assisted-contract basis. In fact, since 1999, the approach has resulted in a steady job for workers over the age of 50 whose work has been satisfactory.The system, which combines the management of ?natural areas? with a return to work for people in difficulty, is specific to Ille-et-Vilaine.
