In Ille-et-Vilaine, tourism is one of the driving forces of economic development.
The Conseil général is involved in the promotion, development and diversification of tourist activities, working jointly with the tourist board (Comité départemental du tourisme).
It supports investments in recreational or cultural projects slanted at the tourist market and makes a contribution to the development of the tourist accommodation sector.
It also assists in the development of rural tourism and helps professionals to diversify their tourist business in the low season, through business tourism.

Developing rural tourism
The aim? To ensure balanced development in geographical terms and to enhance all that Ille-et-Vilaine has to offer.
In 2006, the Conseil général provided support for 19 gîtes or B&Bs, 11 modernisation projects in family-run, independent, graded hotels, 2 campsites, 4 projects aimed at upgrading recreation amenities and numerous projects for public tourist amenities.

Business tourism as a way forward
The development of business tourism enables the hotel industry to maintain its occupancy rates during the week, even in the low season. The term refers to travel by business people and the hosting of business conferences and seminars.
Since 2005, the Conseil général has supported Haute-Bretagne Événements, the association for the development of business tourism, through the Ille-et-Vilaine Tourist Board. It was joined in this by the city of Rennes and the town of Saint Malo.

Brittany, a destination with a clear identity
The Conseil général and the Ille-et-Vilaine Tourist Board (Comité départemental du tourisme, CDT) have launched a vast PR exercise based on the brand, ?Upper Brittany, Ille-et-Vilaine? (Haute-Bretagne, Ille-et-Vilaine).
Ille-et-Vilaine Conseil général allocates 1.75 million euros every year to the CDT and it, in turn, promotes the area and plays a part in implementing the département's tourist development plan.
Tourism in Upper Brittany: an online booking service
The Upper Brittany Ille-et-Vilaine tourist board has acquired a new tool for professionals and tourists - Haute Bretagne Résa.
This online service platform is used by individual tourists to check on accommodation availability (hotels, campsites or B&B). They are then put in direct contact with their selected venue so that they can make their booking.
