Preserving heritage sites and buildings in Ille-et-Vilaine is one way of maintaining and enhancing its identity.

Restoration of publicly-owned heritage
There are a number of projects underway to restore and maintain historic monuments. Work is also being undertaken to save small heritage sites and constructions not covered by preservation orders e.g. wells, washhouses, wayside Crosses etc. In fact, there are countless reminders of Ille-et-Vilaine's history that must be preserved.
Projects for young volunteers have been set up. These restoration workshops often run during the summer period and are designed for young people who live in the département or who come from all four corners of the globe.

Restoration and maintenance of privately-owned heritage
As far as privately-owned heritage is concerned, Ille-et-Vilaine Conseil général shares the restoration and maintenance of buildings, monuments and historic objects. Private mansions and ?malouinières? (vast residences built in and around Saint-Malo in the 17th and 18th centuries for wealthy local ship owners), objets d'art, boats and parks are all the subject of restoration work, sometimes lasting several years.
