There are churches, castles, paintings, organs, nature conservancy areas, wells, statues, archaeological digs etc. ? in fact, almost 200 new heritage restoration applications are filed every year.

A heritage programme for Ille-et-Vilaine
In 2005, the Conseil général launched a heritage programme for buildings and contents to cover the period between 2006 and 2010. The programme defines the priorities for work and action by the Conseil général (inventory, protection and conservation, enhancement), especially as regards religious, industrial, urban and river or maritime buildings.

Restoration and maintenance of public and private heritage buildings
As far as restoration and maintenance projects are concerned, priority is given to rural heritage not covered by a preservation order i.e. mainly churches and small vernacular constructions such as wells, wash houses, wayside Crosses or chapels etc. Attention is also being paid to saving public and private historic buildings such as mansions and ?malouinières? (vast residences built in the 17th and 18th centuries in and around Saint-Malo for local ship owners), objets d'art, boats or gardens.
In addition to this, archaeological digs and restoration projects are organised for young volunteers from Ille-et-Vilaine and all four corners of the globe.

Listing and enhancing heritage
Over the past 10 years, Ille-et-Vilaine's architectural heritage and historic furnishings have been listed and, to date, more than 160 towns and villages in 22 cantons have acquired a comprehensive list of their heritage.
Enhancement of historic buildings and sites includes the publication of leaflets and CDs for the general public, tourist trails and guided tours in towns of artistic, architectural and historic interest, castles, country houses and listed parks and gardens. Most of these places are open to the public on Heritage Days (15th and 16th September 2007) (lien vers le site du Ministère: http://www.journeesdupatrimoine.culture.fr/)
