Protecting, saving and regaining the quality of the environment is one of the most significant collective challenges facing us today. Ille-et-Vilaine enjoys a wide range of outstanding flora and fauna which has to be preserved. Its ?natural areas?, interpretive trails and cycle tracks all deserve to be protected and enhanced.

Walking: 5,200 km of footpaths in Ille-et-Vilaine
Feel like a walk? In Ille-et-Vilaine, there are 5,200 km of footpaths branching off in every direction. The coastal footpath once used by excisemen runs along a distance of 150 km.

Riding: bridlepaths of particular local interest
Ille-et-Vilaine has 3,700 km of bridlepaths open to riders. There are several equestrian routes classified as being of particular local interest e.g. :
  • Equibreizh, a regional route that covers approximately 700 km from the Brocéliande area to the Emerald Coast via the Vitré area.
  • the Three Forests route (Rennes, Liffré and Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier)
  • the Trans (major routes running through Ille-et-Vilaine).
Cycling : Ille-et-Vilaine's cycle tracks
To allow people to visit Ille-et-Vilaine naturally, at their own speed by bike, the Conseil général has already laid out 170 km of cycle tracks along disused railways or along the banks of the Ille-et-Rance Canal. Over the next few years, 700 additional kilometres of cycle track are planned, on small country roads with very little traffic.
