Heritage inventory

Protecting and describing heritage in Ille-et-Vilaine

Inventaire-Patrimoine

From school to castle, from ciborium to cassock: since 1997, work has been undertaken to establish an inventory of architectural heritage and public and private furnishings in the towns and villages in Ille-et-Vilaine. The inventory covers buildings erected between 400 A.D. and 1940 as well as furnishings and other items made before 1960.

Every year, Ille-et-Vilaine Conseil général gives a grant for the comprehensive listing of any construction, work of art etc. likely to be considered as architectural heritage or historic furniture, furnishings etc.

Heritage on CD and on the Web
For each item or building listed in a town or village, there is a description, an illustration and a map reference. Each town or village has its own CD containing all this information.
By June 2007, 22 cantons in Ille-et-Vilaine, i.e. more than one hundred and sixty towns and villages, had an inventory of their architectural and other heritage.
Browse this inventory on the Web l'inventaire du patrimoine de la Bretagne et de Ille-et-Vilaine (use the town-by-town search engine).
Following on from this preliminary inventory, certain buildings and heritage items will be the subject of an in-depth study and may then be entered in the Ille-et-Vilaine heritage list. This is a means of preserving our heritage at a time when the countryside is undergoing very rapid change.

Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September 2007 : European Heritage Days
In 2007, heritage crafts and trades will be put in the spotlight ? men and women who work to provide cultural assets. The European Heritage Days will provide an opportunity to highlight all the crafts and trades involved in knowledge, conservation, restoration and enhancement of our heritage.
The programme is available on the Heritage Days website.
