An efficient network of transport infrastructures
Thanks to its efficient transport network (roads, airports, shipping, railway), Ille-et-Vilaine is particularly easy to reach:
- airports in Rennes/Saint-Jacques and Dinard/Pleurtuit/Saint-Malo,
- motorways to Caen (1½ hours), Le Mans, Paris (3¼ hours via the A11)
- toll-free dual carriageway to Nantes (1 hour), Saint-Brieuc and Lorient, and soon to Angers (1½ hours) and Redon (1 hour)
- high-speed train (TGV) stations in Rennes, Redon, Vitré, Dol-de-Bretagne and Saint-Malo, with some twenty return services every day between Rennes and Paris.
An attractive département
Well-known for its unspoilt environment and quality of life, its dynamic economy and an unemployment rate below the national average, Ille-et-Vilaine attracts between 7,000 and 8,000 newcomers every year.
It has a population of 930,000 of which 33% are aged under 25. The unemployment rate (6.5% of the working population) is 2 points lower than the national average (8.6%). At the beginning of 2006, it had a working population of almost 400,000 people.
Logistics, automotive industry, food processing and new technologies are all key sectors
Ille-et-Vilaine has almost
350 companies and 20,000 salaried staff working in the electronics and ICT sectors.
The
food-processing industry (Soréal, Groupe Le Duff, Bridel, Comaboko, Claude Léger etc.),
automotive industry (PSA Peugeot Citroën etc.) and the
IT industry (Thalès, France Télécom, Thomson, Motorola etc.) are essential economic sectors in Ille-et-Vilaine.
New sectors are also enjoying major development e.g. logistics, production engineering, marine biotechnologies and environmental technology.
Services to business and the transport sector ? areas of growth
In Ille-et-Vilaine, the tertiary sector (transport, services to business and private individuals, public services etc.) account for
71% of jobs. More than 280,000 people work in the
service industry, mainly providing services for businesses (53,000 jobs). Others service the authorities and the social work and health sectors (84,000). Since 2000, employment in the transport, hotel and catering sectors has risen by almost 20%.
Fisheries and agriculture
On the coast and inland, fisheries and agriculture play an important part in Ille-et-Vilaine's economy. Ille-et-Vilaine is France's
leading département for dairy production and for the production of veal. In 2004, it was the 2nd largest producer of beef, the 3rd largest for cauliflowers and the 4th largest for pigs.
Today, 5% of Ille-et-Vilaine's work force is employed on farms.
A first for France! Since June 2006, mussels grown on stakes in Mont Saint-Michel Bay have been granted the first
appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC, registered designation of origin) for seafood.
