Since 2004, the Conseil général has encouraged the emergence of several areas of specialisation in Ille-et-Vilaine ? centres of excellence. By strengthening these centres, the aim is to decrease the risk of companies relocating elsewhere.

To give greater impetus to logistics, a sector currently enjoying a boom, Ille-et-Vilaine Conseil général is assisting with the setting up of two logistics platforms, in Gaël in the west of the département and Châteaubourg in the east.
 
 
The Conseil général wants to strengthen the marine biotechnologies sector in Saint-Malo, as well as production engineering, information and communication technologies (ICTs) and top-of-the-range automobile production in Rennes.


In 2005, Ille-et-Vilaine Conseil général decided to transfer the Ille-et-Vilaine Testing Laboratory from Rennes to Fougères. Why? Because it wanted to set up a centre of excellence in animal health based, in particular, on the presence of France's food safety agency (Agence française de sécurité sanitaire des aliments, Afssa).
