Assistance for young farmers
In Ille-et-Vilaine, the Conseil général encourages young farmers to set up family-run farms through :
- a top-up to the young farmers allowance
- ?Consultancy? cheques
- assistance with leases on land and/or housing
- an availability agreement signed with a land development and rural establishment company (Société d'aménagement foncier et d'établissement rural)
- support in access to land and a house.
Reacting to changes in the farming sector
To cope with the changes facing the farming sector, the Conseil général is encouraging decreases in operating costs. It provides financial assistance for new farming groups which bring about a reduction in costs by pooling employees and machinery or equipment.
Assistance with job restructuring for farmers in difficulties
More and more farmers are finding themselves in a difficult financial situation and are forced to leave the land or find an additional source of income.
184 farms are included in the minimum social welfare payment (RMI) system. Free training is funded mainly by the Conseil général to help farmers to retrain for a different job.
36 diversification projects supported in 2005
Facing up to the challenge of economic changes means helping farmers to diversify their sources of income and to encourage them to diversify. In 2005, 36 diversification projects received support from the Conseil général, almost one-third of them concerning the energy sector (e.g. barn drying) or the timber sector.
