What is the Ille-et-Vilaine Conseil général ?

How does it function ?

L

The département of Ille-et-Vilaine, the equivalent of a British "county", came into being in 1790 during the French Revolution. Since the first laws on decentralisation entered the statute books, in 1982 and 1983, the Conseil Général (a form of "county council") has been given ever wider powers.

53 councillors
Ille-et-Vilaine's assembly has 53 councillors elected by universal suffrage for a period of 6 years. The Chairman is Jean-Louis Tourenne of the Groupe Socialiste et Démocrate de Progrès (Socialist and Democrat Group for Progress). Every three years, elections are held for one-half of the seats on the assembly. To find out more about the councillors, click on : Annuaire des élus et cantons.

An assembly for Ille-et-Vilaine
Ille-et-Vilaine's assembly is the cornerstone of the Conseil général. It lays down the main guidelines for Ille-et-Vilaine's policies and votes on the budget. It also elects the Chairman of the Conseil général for a period of 3 years. The assembly meets every two months and its meetings are open to the public.

The political groups
The Ille-et-Vilaine assembly is divided into three political groups. The "Socialiste et Démocrate de Progrès" group and the "Radicaux et républicains non inscrits" form the majority; the Union du Centre Group form the opposition.
